LOCATION:
The seaside town of Shanklin is well served by public transport around the island with regular buses and the railway ‘Island Line’ to Ryde and Sandown. The main town is only a 5 minute walk and offers a multitude of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants to entertain all ages and tastes.
During the summer months the seafront is bustling with people gathering at one of the many restaurants or choosing a favoured spot for swimming and sunbathing along the long, golden beach. There is a lot of fun to be had for all the family with a variety of traditional seaside amusements, including crazy golf, arcades and ice cream stalls.
If you like exploring, then Shanklin Chine is a must; with its natural beauty surrounded by waterfalls, streams and rare plants. The entrance is situated within Shanklin Old Village amongst popular local restaurants, pubs and thatched cottages.
Over half this beautiful island is protected as an Area of Outstanding Nature Beauty, so why not take a day to explore some of the stunning scenery by taking a drive along the Military Road. Travel west from Shanklin, through Ventnor, a coastal town that clings to the cliff side and is famously the preferred holiday destination for aspiring Victorians; perhaps stopping on route to get lost in the peaceful Ventnor Botanic Gardens. The final destination being Freshwater Bay, with its sparkly, clear water and breath-taking views and cliff top walks. Park in the Bay and walk up to Tennysons monument. To really blow the cobwebs out, continue to the most western point of the island and the landmark Needles. The birds eye view is worth the hike and refreshments are on hand at the Old Battery, which was the Victorian coastal defence and secret rocket testing site, perched above The Needles. Dropping down the other side of the Tennyson down, Alum Bay comes into view. The twenty-one different coloured sands create a distinctive backdrop for the shingle beach. For those with a head for heights, take the chairlift up and down to the beach, to see The Needles from a difference perspective.
Out of the many other island attractions, why not follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and visit her favourite summer residence. Osborne House and gardens was designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo by the Queen’s beloved husband Prince Albert. In contrast, a day spent at Blackgang Chine will ensure you a rather different Victorian experience; having opened in 1843, it remains the oldest themed attraction in the UK.

The kitchen was well equipped, the front room brilliantly set up to enjoy films on the TV and the beds super comfy. Shanklin was on our doorstep, so when the rain finally subsided on our last day, we could explore on foot. Would thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay.

We stayed at Hope Cottage in Shanklin for a week in February and found it to be well-maintained with all the equipment and space you could need for a family holiday. The décor and furniture was modern and cheerful and the lighting options stunning yet cosy and relaxing. An added bonus was being in a quiet residential road but only a short walk to the promenade, beach and town centre where there were plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants and even a theatre. There is so much to see and do in the Isle of Wight that we have booked Hope Cottage again for June and can’t wait!

Staying here was amazingly close to everything we wanted to do, and using the information provided we visited other places we hadn’t considered. The house is lovely with plenty of room and well equipped. The enclosed garden is ideal for children and dogs as well as for outside eating, weather permitting. Shanklin beach area has a lovely esplanade to walk along accessible for anyone, with a couple of cafes to stop at. There are plenty of public footpath walks all around the area. I would highly recommend staying here and would like to visit again.
Thank you for a wonderful break. |

We had a super birthday stay at Hope Cottage, it was the perfect place to relax and unwind after Christmas/a hectic few weeks. The decor is gorgeous bright and airy. It was spacious, really well appointed and you can really tell that a lot of thought went into making it feel cosy and welcoming. It’s a cracking spot too plenty within walking distance to please both kids and adults and a great base for exploring the Isle of Wight. So glad we found it, it’s such a gem that we’re already planning our next trip!
